A major event in the online music world!

With over 80 albums under its belt, No Type was already causing a fair amount of ruckus as one of the leading online labels (www.notype.com). Now debuting its fourth year of existence, No Type offers music lovers a true physical presence, in the form of the much awaited compilation THE FREEST OF RADICALS.

No Type comes to existence towards the end of 1998, at a time when the word “MP3” is starting to appear on national news. Taking advantage of the historical opportunity, founder David Turgeon sees an entry point for a large pool of music which remain unheard by the public for reasons mostly economic. The site thus becomes a microcosm of artistic freedom for a handful of hard-working outsiders who see No Type as an ideal place to refine their art and participate to great common projects.

Founded in Québec City, the label moves to Montréal in January 1999, but its activities continue to be focused on Internet, where it offers a broad selection of free music as the word begins to spread… Nowadays the site hosts artists from all over North America and Europe, little known creators whose undeniable talent and originality No Type has been among the first to acknowledge.

The compilation gives a much needed room to a number of Canadian and Québecer musicians such as Magali Babin, morceaux_de_machines, Le Chien Borgne, speech.fake, Camp and James Schidlowsky. Already, many of the included artists, such as Tomas Jirku, Octopus Inc, Dick Richards, Chris Degiere, Claudia Bonarelli and Books on Tape, are simultaneously pursuing a musical career on the roster of various well-established labels.

THE FREEST OF RADICALS, through its varied and challenging musical landscape, shatters the hidden face of the recording industry, which too often ignores unconventional artistic developments and hinders so-called “difficult” musics. This was very well understood by the producer, the audacious visionary Jean-François Denis, also founder and director of the prestigious label empreintes DIGITALes and the international distributor DIFFUSION i MéDIA.
